How to Cure Writer’s Block

It’s happened. After writing countless articles and/or blog posts, your mind has gone blank. You can’t think of another topic and even if you could, you wouldn’t know where to start writing. You have…writer’s block!

Writer’s block is not a disease, but it is still incredibly frustrating, especially when you have a deadline on the horizon. The good news is that you are not alone.

There’s hardly a writer alive who hasn’t had writer’s block at some point in their lives, and there are many reasons why someone can get writer’s block. You might feel burned out, you have too many distractions, your expectations are too high, or you aren’t sure which direction your piece should go, etc. Sometimes it seems easier to sit, waiting for a brilliant idea to pop into your head, but that won’t work. Instead, do something to cure your writer’s block by trying some of these suggestions.


The first step to beating your writer’s block is making sure you’ve eaten. Your body works better when it has food. In fact, eating the right types of food can improve your focus and make you more productive. Oatmeal, blueberries, salmon, and dark chocolate are just some examples of these types of food. If you’re full, you’ll be more focused, and a growling stomach won’t distract you while you’re writing.


It’s incredibly common for individuals to not get enough sleep. With hectic schedules and long to-do lists, sleep tends to be a low priority. Unfortunately, that won’t help with your concentration and could contribute to your writer’s block.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-8 hours of sleep for older adults to stay in good health. If you’re exhausted when you write, you won’t be able to focus on what you are writing about. So, if you’re a writer, make sure you get enough sleep at night to stay concentrated on your articles.

Change of Scenery

Another great way to fix writer’s block is to change your environment. Let’s face it, looking at the same cubicle wall won’t help you get new ideas. Instead of sitting in the same place to write, try moving somewhere else. Go for a walk, work outside with a laptop, reorient yourself in your current space, or hang up some inspiring artwork. Changing things up a bit will help to get your creative juices flowing.


Another way to get unstuck when writing is to get your blood flowing. Be active. Obviously, there are many different ways to do this. Whether that’s running, dancing, or working out, doing some sort of exercise will perk your brain up. The increased blood flow to your brain will make it that much easier to write.


For some people, they cure their writer’s block by creating a routine. If you’re facing this problem, try creating your own routine. Do you research your topic and then take a walk to let your ideas develop? Or do you walk first? Whatever your routine is, if it beats your writer’s block, then make it a habit.

Cure Your Writer’s Block

When you find yourself stuck with writer’s block, don’t be too discouraged. It’s not permanent, and all it takes to cure are just a few simple things. Make sure you eat enough, sleep enough, try a change of scenery, are active, and set a routine. Before you know it, you will be writing like before and your writer’s block will be gone.
